Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody on Wednesday filed a felony attempted murder charge against Ryan Wesley Routh, the man whom authorities apprehended in connection with an apparent assassination attempt on President-elect Donald Trump earlier this year.
In the announcement, Moody chided federal law enforcement, asserting they attempted to obstruct the state’s investigation.
“The feds have stonewalled Florida’s investigation of the Trump assassination attempt at every turn, and I appreciate AG Ashley Moody and her team for plowing forward despite such resistance,” Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., said on X. “The tide will turn on January 20th and we fully expect that the federal roadblocks will be removed. The would-be assassin needs to face the full force of justice and the people deserve the truth about the defendant’s history, motivations and plan.”
Routh was previously charged with attempted assassination in September. The incident allegedly saw the Secret Service discover Routh waiting in the bushes near where Trump was golfing and open fire. Routh was later apprehended by local authorities.
He originally faced charges of obliteration of a firearm’s serial number and possessing a firearm while a convicted felon.
