The Smith-Mundt Act passed in 1948 allowing U.S. propaganda abroad but not inside the United States. It was amended in 2013 under Obama, which legally allows propaganda in the United States. This Act is the reason for much of the division inside the U.S. experienced since it’s passage.
“The Smith-Mundt Modernization Act of 2012 allowed for materials produced by the State Department and the U.S. Agency for Global Media to be disseminated within the United States.”
Listen to Mike Benz, former State Department Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Communications and Information Technology, breakdown the effects Obama’s amendment has had on public discourse.
Interesting tidbit: The reason the repeal of the Information and Educational Exchange Act of 1948 is hidden away under Section 1078 of something totally unrelated is because they quietly rammed it through as part of the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act. pic.twitter.com/JLyXe6mxFI
