Facebook Is Letting China Buy Ads Depicting Uyghurs As “Thriving”…

U.S. big tech social media companies continue to allow the Communist Chinese government a platform to spew lies and disinformation even as they censor and throttle the speech and posts of Americans.

The Daily Caller notes:

Facebook staffers were reportedly growing concerned that the platform was allowing Chinese state actors to buy ads spreading propaganda with limited regulations, according to a report published Friday.

Employees were discussing ads purchased by Chinese entities that depict “thriving” Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang province, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. China was estimated to have detained at least 1 million Uyghurs in reeducation camps, in what the U.S. considered an act of genocide.

Though the Facebook platform has been blocked by Chinese state censors since 2009, the platform has nevertheless raked in $5 billion annually in ad revenue from Chinese businesses and various Communist government agencies, Reuters reported.

One Muslim staffer at Facebook reportedly wrote a “plea to leadership” for the platform to “action to fight misinformation on the Uighur genocide,” according to the WSJ.

Chris Cox, the chief product officer for Facebook, was tagged in the internal memo, the Journal reported.

“This is incredibly serious. Let me check with our integrity teams for a status update and circle back personally,” he said, according to the paper.

“Advertisements purchased by Beijing included videos featuring children showcasing the supposedly great lives they are living in Xinjiang detention camps, the Journal reported. The ads claim that the West was trying to ‘destabilize China’ with false claims of genocide,” The Daily Caller noted.

The detention camps are described by the Chinese government as “vocational training centers” that seek to combat religious extremism and terrorism. The U.S. and some European countries note that sterilization and torture of the Uyghur Muslim minority is nothing short of “cultural genocide.”

“State-run Xinhua News Agency reportedly purchased an ad last month featuring the mayor of the capital city of Xinjiang. In the ad, the mayor claims ‘peace and stability that people from all ethnic groups in Xinjiang once longed for has become a reality,’ and accused the West of trying to disrupt China’s internal affairs,” The Daily Caller reported, noting further the ad was viewed more than 200,000 times before it was removed.

Now, in terms of earning, “China remains Facebook’s second-largest market by annual revenue after the United States,” Fool.com reported in January.

“Pivotal Research analyst Brian Weiser previously estimated that Facebook generated $5 billion to $7 billion from Chinese advertisers throughout fiscal 2018, which equaled roughly 10% of its top line,” the outlet noted further.

The site went on to report that Facebook recently hired a new Singapore-based engineering team to develop new ad-buying tools for China-based firms. In addition, Facebook stated it is “committed to becoming the best marketing platform for Chinese companies going abroad” during a WeChat post in November.

Fool.com went on to explain how Facebook earns revenue from behind…
