Former President Donald Trump took a commanding lead over his Republican primary opponents in a recent survey.
Earning the support of 55% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, Trump took a 36% lead over nearest rival Ron DeSantis, who took 19% in the latest I&I/TIPP poll. Former Vice President Mike Pence took 6% while all the other candidates were classified as “other” and collectively attracted 14% support.
When asked whether they would prefer Trump or DeSantis to run against Biden, 41% backed Trump to 32% who broke for the Florida governor.
“Trump’s edge, when it comes to his own party, again appears insurmountable at this early stage of the nominating process,” the pollsters wrote.
Notably, the survey period, which ran from May 31 to June 2, concluded prior to the public announcement that Trump would face 37 criminal charges in connection with his alleged mishandling of classified documents. It remains unclear how the development will affect his standing in the race.
