A newly released FBI document has ignited a political firestorm on Capitol Hill, with top Republicans accusing the Biden administration of weaponizing federal law enforcement against its political opponents.
According to Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA), the document shows that the FBI secretly conducted toll-record analysis on eight Republican senators as part of its controversial “Arctic Frost” investigation — a probe that later became Special Counsel Jack Smith’s “elector” case against then former President Donald Trump.
Grassley published the document Monday morning, calling it proof that the FBI “spied” on sitting senators without proper justification. The one-page memo, dated September 27, 2023, is marked “UNCLASSIFIED//FOUO” and titled “CAST Assistance.” It reveals that the Washington Field Office authorized preliminary toll analysis — a review of call and text records — on limited phone numbers tied to several high-profile lawmakers.
The memo lists Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Bill Hagerty (R-TN), Josh Hawley (R-MO), Dan Sullivan (R-AK), Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), Ron Johnson (R-WI), Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) among the individuals whose records were scrutinized.
