Kim Jong-un wept during a huge military parade in North Korea as he issued a rare apology for his failures during the coronavirus outbreak.
The leader, in contrast to Boris Johnson who has remained resolute and defensive despite facing criticism for his handling of the pandemic, showed his softer side as he removed glasses and wiped away his tears in unusually conciliatory tones.
North Korea claims to be totally free of the virus with no deaths, although this has been disputed, while Britain is on the brink of further lockdowns amid rising infections, with a new three-tier system expected to be implemented today.
Kim said to the maskless crowd at a parade to mark the 75th anniversary of the country’s ruling Workers’ party, according to a translation in The Korea Times: ‘Our people have placed trust, as high as the sky and as deep as the sea, in me, but I have failed to always live up to it satisfactorily.
