A senior Department of Homeland Security official said Chicagoans went on a “rampage” Sunday night into early Monday, looting high-end businesses and destroying property downtown following a shooting that involved a police officer.

“It’s a rampage,” acting Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Mark Morgan said during remarks at a Heritage Foundation webinar Monday afternoon. “This should be alarming to every American citizen, in every city in this country. We cannot have that. We are a country based on the Constitution and the rule of law. If we do not maintain the rule of law and law and order, this is what you’re going to see.”

The violence in downtown Chicago broke out after a man was injured during a police shooting. Hundreds of people descended on Michigan Avenue and Lake Street, breaking into designer shops and drugstores and stealing merchandise. Coach, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Macy’s, and Nordstrom in the city’s Magnificent Mile area were among the stores looted.
