Ketanji Brown Jackson has officially been sworn in as a justice on the US Supreme Court.

Her swearing in comes after Justice Stephen Breyer announced his retirement on Wednesday, which went into effective Thursday at noon.

After Breyer made it known in January that he would be retiring, President Biden set to work fulfilling his promise to nominate a black woman to the Supreme Court.

His nominee, Jackson, was confirmed by the Senate in April following a series of what many deemed to be contentious hearings by the Judiciary Committee.

Throughout her confirmation process, she faced criticism for her judicial philosophy and inability to define the word “woman,” arguing that she wasn’t “a biologist.” Sen. Rand Paul suggested that this would affect her ability to rule in Title IX cases.

Republicans grilled the judge on her on her lenient sentences for child pornographers and questioned the fact that she served on the board of an elite prep school in Washington, DC.
