Target will offer its workers free tuition and textbooks at more than 40 colleges starting this fall, joining other major corporations offering similar benefits to attract workers as pandemic unemployment benefits are scheduled to run out next month.
The Minneapolis-based retailer said Wednesday that it plans to spend $200 million over the next four years on free undergraduate and associate degrees for its part-time and full-time workers in the US, including those on their first day on the job.
Its partner institutions include Morehouse College, the University of Arizona, Oregon State University, the University of Denver, eCornell and Paul Quinn College.
The move comes as businesses around the US have scrambled to fill positions after pandemic-related employment benefits led many in the workforce to trade their jobs for government relief – which often added up to more money than they were getting from low-level roles…
