In the 2024 Election in Milwaukee absentee ballots were hid and processed behind a large black curtain. This will likely happen again in the upcoming 2025 Supreme Court Election unless someone stops it.
The intent of virtually every election statute is to presumably to deter, detect, stop, and punish fraud. Transparency is necessary to detect fraud. However, during the 2024 election, the Milwaukee Central Count location was located in a large room in the Baird Center, and a black curtain was set up at one end, to the left of the front door of the room. Multiple objections were made on November 4th through November 6th to have the curtain removed or to allow observers to see what was going on behind the curtain, but it was not removed. Many observers requested to see what was going on behind the curtain but were not allowed to go back there.
This is not in accordance with Wisconsin Statute 7.41(2) and certainly is not transparent.
“…at the polling place, office, or alternate site. The observation areas shall be so positioned to permit any election observer to readily observe all public aspects of the voting process.”
One observer during the walkthrough on November 4th, the day before the election, asked why they could not observe what happened behind the black curtain. After a pause, an election official said because of “health and safety reasons.” Another observer asked what was the health reason but an answer was never really given.
