The Justice Department under President Donald Trump has obtained internal FBI records revealing the startling extent of the Bureau’s involvement in January 6 investigations. FBI officials have handed over data on thousands of employees involved in January 6-related probes—an unprecedented move that has rattled Bureau personnel.
The disclosure comes amid mounting pressure on the FBI to answer for its handling of January 6 cases, as Republicans have accused the agency of conducting politically motivated prosecutions while ignoring alleged misconduct from left-wing agitators and federal informants.
The details of over 5,000 agency employees, encompassing ID numbers, job titles, and their involvement in the January 6 investigations, were disclosed to the DOJ, according to CNN. The FBI has just over 13,000 agents and 38,000 total employees on its payroll.
In a memo titled “Terminations” sent on Friday, Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove set a Tuesday noon deadline for FBI officials to provide the details of thousands of agents and analysts, sources told the outlet. Bove had previously directed the dismissal of eight senior FBI officials responsible for overseeing cyber, national security, and criminal investigations.
